Breath Control Training FAQs

A quick guide to the most frequently asked questions about this program

CAN MY 7- OR 8-YEAR-OLD JOIN THIS PROGRAM? No, this program is structured for ages 9–13 and 14–18 so training groups stay balanced and concepts can be taught effectively. The skills taught here are more advanced than what younger swimmers are typically ready for. If your child is under 9, Stroke Development is the best place to start until they meet the age requirement.

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED? All Breath Control & Ocean Confidence training sessions take place on Sundays at Fletcher High School in Neptune Beach, Florida.

WHY IS TRAINING ONLY OFFERED ON SUNDAYS? Fletcher High School is a heavily used facility, and Sunday is the only availability I was able to secure for group training. As a full-time mobile instructor during the week, Sundays allow me to focus on breath control sessions without impacting my weekday lesson schedule.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY CHILD TRAIN? The Intro Course is designed as an entry point, not a standalone experience. Continuing in an 8-week training block is highly recommended to develop and retain breath control skills. Athletes who commit to regular weekly training see the greatest improvement and carryover in the water.

CAN MY CHILD JOIN A TRAINING BLOCK MID SEASON? Athletes may join in the middle of a training block only if space is available and they have already completed the Intro Course. New students are not able to enter weekly training without completing the Intro Course first.

IS BREATH-HOLD TRAINING SAFE? Yes, when it is coached and supervised correctly. All breath-hold training in this program is structured, closely monitored, and safety-led. Training focuses on hypercapnic (elevated carbon dioxide) work rather than hypoxic (low oxygen) breath holds. Unsupervised or competitive breath-holding is never allowed. Safety is built into every drill and every session.

DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BE A STRONG SWIMMER? Yes, participants must already be able to swim independently and confidently. This program is not for beginners. It builds on existing swimming skills to train underwater efficiency, calmness, and breath control. Students who are still developing basic swimming skills should begin in Stroke Development before joining this program.

WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD BRING TO TRAINING? Goggles or Mask Comfortable swimsuit Towel Water bottle Optional: short training fins
